Akatori has that Neo Geo style that I adore.

Today’s Guerrilla Collective webcast included a piece of gameplay for the forthcoming Metroidvania Akatori, showcasing the game’s first boss. A copy of the trailer is attached above.

Without delving too much into whether or not I genuinely want to play a new 2D platformer, I appreciate Akatori’s aesthetic. The flat layers and color palette remind me of Neo Geo arcade games like Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug, which I consider to be the pinnacle of sprite-art (albeit Akatori isn’t quite as pixely). I can’t seem to get enough of it.

Mako, the protagonist of Akatori, has the capacity to jump between parallel universes—it appears that the modern-day scenes are one of those universes, as opposed to the past. “Explore the realms filled with magic and secrets, discover friends and allies, and try not to awaken the ancient God,” the Steam website asks.

Akatori is listed on Steam with a TBA release date, but aside from this teaser, the most recent news is that it is seeking further financing. This summer, the creators will launch a Kickstarter campaign.
