Quake Champions is honoring the 25th anniversary of the game with “a rocket blast from the past” with their Summer 2021 release. The upgrade includes one of the original 1996 Quake multiplayer maps, The Dark Zone, as well as a variety of heritage weapon customizations.
As someone who grew up playing the original Quake multiplayer, this piqued my interest. (Yes, that was highly improper for my age.) Some people get their nostalgia fix from JRPG remasters, whereas I get mine from sludgy brown bricks. It doesn’t appear to be the map as it is, but rather the Quake Champions version of it, with more fluid lighting and portals that truly shine. The most essential thing is that it still appears very blocky.
Wes previously discussed why you should still play the original Quake “It doesn’t look so hot these days, and the fantasy setting is about as deep as a kid putting on his robe and wizard hat to cosplay,” and a game with plenty of wisdom to offer: “It doesn’t look so hot these days, and the fantasy setting is about as deep as a kid putting on his robe and wizard hat to cosplay.” After a few levels, you’ll understand why retro shooters like Dusk skipped 20 years of advancement to return to Quake’s level design school. It’s still an engrossing textbook. Just with weapons, you know.”
Along with the vintage map and legacy weapon skins (for the Tribolt, Super Nail Gun, and Railgun), the update offers improves HUD and audio settings, as well as anti-cheat measures. The Quake blog has a comprehensive explanation of what’s new in Quake Champions.
