The huge 2.0 update to Genshin Impact adds a new Ghibli-inspired island location.

The next update for Genshin Impact jumps from 1.6 to 2.0, indicating that this will be the game’s greatest expansion yet: introducing the new area of Inazuma, which consists of three islands loaded with new NPCs, adventures, and, of course, plenty of wonderful stuff (and with more islands to come in later updates). It looks really stunning, and creator MiHoYo says the design was heavily influenced by Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and other Studio Ghibli films.

The expansion, titled ‘The Immovable God and the Eternal Euthymia,’ will be released on July 21.

From the press announcement, here’s some information on the new region: “Inazuma, unlike Mondstadt and Liyue, is surrounded by sea on all sides and consists of six main islands, which are frequently accompanied by a strong sea breeze and thunderstorms. Although lightning and the Electro element have a strong influence on Inazuma, the Electro Archon who controls the territory has converted to the quest of eternal. Players will be able to discover the distinct cultural landscapes, tales, mysteries, and historical ties to Inazuma and the Electro Archon on each of the numerous islands throughout the journey in Inazuma, as well as the answers to eternity from the Electro Archon herself.”

The developer live stream (which can be viewed here) was a departure for MiHoYo, as we don’t often hear from the people who are actually making the game, and they announced that v2.0 would include “a massive amount of stories including main & side quests” as well as three new playable characters: Ayaka, Yoimiya, and Saya.

I’d be lying if I claimed I understood what was going on in the plot, but I enjoy this new NPC Toma, who is characterized as “a bright and compassionate brother with a decent amount of heat.”

The update will also include cross-save support for PlayStation, PC, and mobile, so you won’t have any excuse not to put in the time. Finally, the stream has so far handed out three worldwide limited codes, and we’ll keep you updated if there are any more. There are three codes: AS6BQKLY9GLD, LS6T4L9ZZ7TH, and GBNA9J5H9Y4H, which you input here for various in-game rewards.
