It’s true: Dead Space is returning. EA announced a remake of the 2008 sci-fi horror shooter under development at EA Motive during its EA Play webcast on Thursday. Motive also created last year’s excellent Star Wars Squadrons and Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s single-player campaign.
The Dead Space series was created by Visceral Games, which was acquired by EA in 2017. Some of Visceral’s previous leaders founded a new firm in 2019 and released their debut game, The Callisto Protocol, last year, which had strong Dead Space overtones. Now it appears that their spiritual sequel will compete with a recreation of their first game.
Here’s the summary of the new remake from EA’s YouTube channel:
“The sci-fi survival horror classic Dead Space returns, completely rebuilt from the ground up by Motive Studios to offer a deeper and more immersive experience. Harnessing the power of the Frostbite game engine and next-generation consoles, this remake brings jaw-dropping visual fidelity and improvements to the gameplay while staying true to the original. Dead Space will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.”
Motive, the Dead Space remake’s creators, confirm in an interview with IGN that everything in the game is being recreated from scratch in Frostbite. “We’re not transferring them, we’re not resizing the texture, and we’re not adding additional polygons to the model. It’s a lot of work constructing all of these pieces and filming all of the animations “says Roman Campos-Oriola, creative director.

According to reports, the Dead Space remake will be quite similar to the original, but not identical. Campos-Oriola, for example, refers to abandoned level design elements that were altered during the original game’s production. In addition to the improved graphics and sound, we could see EA Motive rely on some of those original concepts for its remake.
EA Motive is also exploring increased accessibility options, as well as adding plot elements from Dead Space 2 and 3 or incorporating enhancements from the sequels. One item that will not be returning is the microtransactions from Dead Space 3: there will be none in the remake.
It also appears that production is in its early stages since EA Motive describes the clip above as an “atmospheric benchmark” for the company to aim towards. We’re going to have to wait a bit for this one.
