Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is a Warhammer-ass gaming title, and the gloriously overblown cinematic that debuted in August matched that intensity well. However, the gameplay reveals video released today manages to outdo it all with a dramatic cry to arms exhorting the Grey Knights to take against Chaos’ terrible taint.
However, once you’ve gotten beyond all of the commotions, you’ll be able to see some gameplay, which really looks very nice. Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is a turn-based tactical RPG in the vein of Grimdark XCOM. The action is satisfyingly meaty and sticky, and one fantastic environmental kill gives me hope for more of the same throughout the game.
We also get a glimpse of the game’s strategic layer, which takes place in a warp drive-powered Neo-Gothic temple in high orbit. According to the video, you’ll be traveling between worlds on your mission, repairing and upgrading systems, doing research, and customizing your Space Marines for optimum killability.
Tactical combat games live or die on subtleties—reactive AI, risk and reward, gameplay surprises, and so on—that are rarely shown in trailers. Nonetheless, Chaos Gate seems promising at this point: if the mechanics can live up to the atmosphere, this might be a truly exciting tactical fighting experience.
Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters (if nothing else, it’s a terrible title) will be released on Steam and the Epic Store in 2022. If you’re searching for some Warhammer gaming to keep you occupied in the interim, PCGamer ranked every Warhammer 40K PC game ever produced—and if that’s not enough, they also ranked every Warhammer Fantasy game ever made.
And, in case you missed it, here’s the Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters cinematic. We are the sledgehammer!
