The previous trailer for Necromunda: Hired Gun, a first-person shooter set in the mega-grim Warhammer 40,000 universe, didn’t pique my interest. Wall-running, grapple-hooking, and an autogun that looks like a typical assault weapon didn’t do anything for me, though the pet cyber-mastiff attack dog was a good touch. The new trailer does a slightly better job at making Hired Gun sound fascinating when it shows us a little bit of what happens in between all the shooty bang, knife stab, and doggy bite.
It focuses on Martyr’s End, a pub where contacts distribute bounty hunter gigs, a crooked doctor practises suspicious treatments, and the barmaid is an intelligence broker. According to the press release, it’s also where you’ll meet famous bounty hunter Kal Jerico (star of various 40K comics and novels), update your bionics, customise your avatar, and send your mastiff on treat-sniffing missions.
The ability to create your own persona rather than being forced to play the beardy bloke with the Viking undercut in the artwork is a big bonus, as is the possibility of people to talk to and stuff to do in your spare time. Maybe it’ll be similar to Metro?
Hired Gun is being developed by Streum On, the company behind EYE: Divine Cybermancy and Space Hulk: Deathwing, all of which find fans despite their jankiness. Focus Home Interactive, the French publisher of Games Workshop adaptations such as Blood Bowl, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada, and Necromunda: Underhive Wars in its portfolio, recently acquired Streum On.
Necromunda: Hired Gun will be released on Steam and Epic Games on June 1.
