Since the game’s announcement in 2018, there hasn’t been any information about Dying Light 2. Between the silence and the news about Techland’s work culture, viewers became concerned that the second entry in the Dying Light franchise will be trapped in purgatory indefinitely. Fortunately, the first episode of a new Developer AMA video series is assuaging some of those fears when answering often asked fan questions.
Tymon Smektala, the game’s lead designer, confirmed a few specifics, including the fact that the map size is more than twice what it was in the first game. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard it, but he does explain in the video below that the expanded scale refers to both length and verticality.
He also went into more depth on the different types of enemies that players would face and how the time of day gameplay mechanics will influence their behaviour. Although the overnight hours are clearly more risky, that doesn’t mean you can’t take a walk around the park during the day without incident. It’s not just zombies that pose a threat, which keeps players on their toes from beginning to end.
The first Dying Light was a fun experience, but there wasn’t anything that distinguished it from other horror games in the genre, at least not for me. Dying Light 2 totally pivots the series, with several new features that make it stand out on its own, and in stunning ways that would make RPG fans drool. We saw firsthand how dramatic the effects can be, including transforming the whole architecture of the world map, with last year’s E3 look. Techland has a massive challenge ahead of them with this game, but will the studio be able to complete it? Dying Light 2 would have a long-lasting effect on the game industry and its growth strategy.
We really don’t have a release date, so we’re looking forward to learning more about the journey ahead. Dying Light 2 is in the works for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
