Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart introduce Sony-verse

Insomniac Games teased a slew of crossovers with PlayStation Studios titles including Sunset Overdrive, Uncharted 4, Horizon Forbidden West, and Sly Cooper, and now we know why.

Late Monday evening, Insomniac began tweeting graphics implying Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was collaborating with the aforementioned games. Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Sucker Punch Productions all quote-tweeted Insomniac’s antics and added in-jokes to show they were in on the joke.

Then, when rumors of a Sunset Overdrive PlayStation adaptation and a PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2 circulated, Insomniac revealed what all the commotion was about. The hints seem to be leading up to the introduction of a “superweapon” in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. The weapon is known as the RYNO 8, and Insomniac claims it can bring back items from earlier PlayStation games by causing rifts between the two realities. It’s unclear how these artifacts will be used in the game just yet, but some examples appear to include a Jeep-like vehicle from Uncharted 4 and, quite unnervingly, a Thunderjaw from Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Forbidden West.

While it is now evident that Insomniac Games was only hyping up a new weapon, there is still a fair chance that Sunset Overdrive will be released on PlayStation. After all, the game’s official Twitter account awoke from a two-year hibernation to participate in Insomniac’s promotion. Though it debuted as a Microsoft exclusive in 2014, Insomniac has since been bought by PlayStation Studios, so there’s no reason it can’t make its way to the PS4 and PS5.

We haven’t heard anything about a sequel to 2012’s PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale in a while, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Back in 2019, we reported on a rumor claiming that precisely such a game was in the works for the PlayStation 5. Still, without an official announcement from PlayStation, we’ll have to wait and see.
