Beasts of Maravilla Island is a new game that’s similar to Pokémon Snap except with banana birds and otter crocodiles.

Nintendo will never bring Pokémon Snap to PC, but thank goodness for indie developers who have created something similar. To great success, Stardew Valley and Wargroove did the same with other Nintendo classics that were absent on PC, and indie game Beasts of Maravilla Island sounds like a treat: it’s an adventure game about exploring a weird and photographing its creatures. It caught my eye at Saturday’s Wholesome Games Direct, and lo and behold, it’s now available on Steam.

Maravilla Island, according to game director Michelle Olson, is “a game about discovering remarkable species, understanding their behaviour, and, most importantly, photographing them.” However, it differs from other photography games in that you will be solving riddles as you go and climbing about the landscape to uncover some well-hidden critters.

There are also birds who disguise themselves as bananas. That’s a great critter.

A few more features, courtesy of the Steam page:

  • Includes over 50 extraordinary creatures and plants to photograph, each with their own appearance and behavior such as the Sparkling Lamp lily, the Maravillan Mango Kakapo and the Prism-Winged Butterfly.
  • Complete puzzles that rely on your cooperation with animals, including playing hide and seek with an Otter Crocodile or helping a Bird Monkey find his perfect match.
  • Explore three distinctive ecological zones, the Singing Jungle, the Glimmering River, and the Painted Plateau- each containing their own unique flora and fauna to uncover.
