Control is free on Epic Games Store this week

In a week full of gaming surprises and announcements, Epic Games Store has released a particularly tasty freebie—until June 17, you can get the basic edition of Control for free and keep it forever.

Control is Remedy’s 2019 action game about a woman making her way through the Bureau, a possessed office building, acquiring and then utilizing supernatural talents to restore order (or whatever passes for order there), and discovering what happened to her brother who was stolen by the Bureau years ago.

It’s a little spooky! Deformed pencil pushers can be telekinetically smacked in the face with their own office chairs! There are errands to do for a janitor that observes everything and sings Finnish melodies while sweeping the floors! The Bureau is a fantastic area to explore, so much so that we awarded it our Best Setting of 2019. And, if your system is capable of it, you should look at Control’s ray tracing as well.

Control is fantastic. It was always worthwhile to purchase, and it is an absolute no-brainer to get for free. The ordinary edition lacks Control’s two expansions, though you might not miss them too much. The first, The Foundation, isn’t all that great, and AWE (Alan Wake Expansion, get it?) is more of a warm-up for whatever comes next in the Remedy Connected Universe, presumably previewing any future Alan Wake material the developer would hopefully (please, please) hurl our way.

Control is available for free on the Epic Games Store until June 17, 4 p.m. BST/ 11 a.m. ET.
