Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is no longer exclusive to the Wii U and is now available on PC.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was not favorably reviewed when it was released on the Wii U in 2015. Our sister site Gamesradar+ panned it for having “hugely repetitive action” and an “uninteresting narrative,” while also saying it’s “not at all terrifying.” Those are harsh words for a horror game, but perhaps these remaster, commemorating the series’ 20th anniversary, will help.

This fifth installment takes place on an eerie mountain known for suicides and strange occurrences, and the action is told through the eyes of three individuals. The Wii U controller was used as the camera in the original version: in line with the series’ core gimmick, Maiden of Black Water is about photographing villains to ward them off rather than pummeling them with blunt things.

His re-release is, to say the least, unexpected: It will be the first Fatal Frame game to be released on PC. The above clip, which was shown at Nintendo’s E3 2021 presentation, says that the Steam edition would contain “a new Photo mode and costumes.” It’s not the celebratory series that fans had hoped for, but it does give fans optimism that Koei Tecmo is working on a new Fatal Frame (that isn’t a pachinko).

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is scheduled to be released in 2021.
