Storybook Brawl, a card game auto battler, was released in Early Access on Steam yesterday, allowing users to choose “your favorite characters from tale and myth,” such as the trademark-neutral “Snow Wight” or “Princess Peep and her battle-hardened sheep.” Each fairytale figure has its own set of skills.
With its theme and large, bright UI, Storybook Brawl appears to be the type of game that is simple to learn yet tough to master. “The objective was to build a game that everyone could get into and have fun with,” explains creator Matt Place, who was a Magic Pro Tour champion before pursuing game creation. “Fairytales provide us with a vast assortment of characters with varying personalities and qualities to explore, allowing us to create a highly approachable game that is not overly difficult yet has a deep strategy for those who want it.”
Good Luck Games is helmed by three former professional card game players who have subsequently switched to game creation, working on projects such as Hearthstone and Elder Scrolls: Legends before collaborating on Storybook Brawl. It’s amazing that they would choose to develop such an easy game after playing at such a high level. The majority of Steam reviewers are already lovers of the genre. (At the time of writing, there are 33 reviews for Storybook Brawl, with a “positive” average.)
Storybook Brawl will be available in Early Access until “late 2021 to early 2022.” The fundamental mechanisms and many of the final game items (including “1 Ultra Cute Puff Puff”) are currently in place, but players can expect to see features like group lobbies, buddy chat, and fully-voiced characters added.
Storybook Brawl is a free-to-play game that can be found on Steam.
