Dotemu, the independent publisher responsible for legendary ’90s game revivals such as Streets of Rage 4, is back with a game I had no idea was coming: Metal Slug Tactics. The game, which was announced today at the Summer Game Fest, is billed on Steam as “a dynamic tactical RPG with roguelike aspects.”
Metal Slug Tactics is an isometric strategy game with pixel art that I enjoy looking at. It’s not nearly as graphic and flamboyant as the classic Metal Slug arcade games, but it still has a lot of personality. It’s a bouncy Advance Wars.
The pitch from the Steam website is as follows:
“Experience the classic dynamic combat of the METAL SLUG series from a whole new angle. Build up your adrenaline bar to unlock powerful attacks and know how to employ them. After each fight, gain valuable war experience and acquire weaponry or added bonuses to help your team’s firepower.”
Other information:
- Mission layouts are produced procedurally.
- Metal Slug bosses are making a comeback.
- Marco, Eri, Fio, and Tarma are among the returning characters.
Metal Slug Tactics does not yet have a release date.
