Outer Wilds, a game released in 2019 by Mobius Digital and Annapurna Interactive, is about exploring a solar system only minutes before its sun goes supernova and wipes out everything—only to wake up and experience it all over again due to a time loop that only you seem to be aware of. It’s fantastic—we awarded it an 89 percent in our review—and it’ll be returning in September with a surprise addition called Echoes of the Eye.
Outer Wilds will get a new mystery with Echoes of the Eye: An anomaly that has no known correlation with any known place in the solar system. But there’s something sinister about it.
“A weird satellite image that defies explanation. A new museum display that serves as the starting point for one final excursion into the wilderness, “Annapurna made a joke. “Should you uncover the solar system’s darkest secret by pulling at the thread, or is certain information best kept in the dark?”
And, fittingly for Outer Wilds, a game that drops you into a small, weird planetary system with no indication of what you’re supposed to accomplish (and then blows you up 15 minutes later), that’s all there is to it: The nature of the enigma and the mysteries it conceals are totally up to you to uncover.
Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye will be available for $15 on Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 28. More information may be found at annapurnainteractive.com.
