Storyteller, a small yet brilliant puzzle game about telling stories, is released by Annapurna.

Daniel Benmergui released a video in 2013 demonstrating some alpha gameplay from his puzzle game project Storyteller. In 2018, he announced a collaboration with Annapurna Interactive, which meant, among other things, that “we have to finish it.” And now, in 2021, we’re finally getting a glimpse of how far it’s progressed in a new video released today during Annapurna’s online display.

In Storyteller, you’re given a backdrop, a cast of characters, and a title and must weave them together into a tale that plays out on a short storyboard. You may tell your narrative as you choose, reproducing classics from the past or creating something totally new, as long as it finishes the way it should: as a tragedy, a love story, or something more particular.

The gameplay in the new trailer appears to be the same as it did in 2013, and even earlier—the very first Storyteller video on Benmergui’s channel dates back to 2012—but the level of polish has obviously come a long way, and I would expect the variety and flexibility of storytelling options to have expanded significantly as well. It appears to be a lot of fun, and I’m excited to test it out.

Sadly, despite the passage of time and evident development, there is still no evidence of the finish that Benmergui promised. There is, however, a trial available today on Steam that you may try out.
