The original six Final Fantasy games are receiving a fresh pixel paint job.

Square Enix has announced that they would be re-releasing the original six Final Fantasy titles, and it appears that they are taking pains to ensure us that it will not be an over-smoothed, vectorized mess like the previous PC and mobile ports.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster will, presumably, retain the original pixel graphics look of the games. Rather than a 2.5D makeover like Dragon Quest, it’ll most likely be some basic upscaling and resolution tweaks. At the very least, it won’t be whatever smooth hell we have on Steam with games like Final Fantasy 6.

The entirety of the early Final Fantasy games, particularly Final Fantasy 4 and 6, are absolute treasures to play through. It’ll be lovely to be able to play them in a more traditional manner. It’s a shame that most past remasters were bad, albeit the 3D remake of Final Fantasy 4 is actually rather good.

The remaster collection now has a release date of “coming soon,” which presumably means we’ll see it on Steam before the end of the year.
