This new Final Fantasy game is so terrible it’s good.

Final Fantasy 16 was not on display during Square Enix’s E3 press conference, but another Final Fantasy was—and my god, it’s so corny I can’t help but appreciate it. Final Fantasy Origin, developed by Team Ninja, appeared to be a Dark Souls clone set in the universe of the original Final Fantasy from 1987.

The trailer didn’t disclose much other than the heroes’ desire to eliminate Chaos. I lost count of how many times that term appeared in the trailer, but the action did seem to be a lot of fun. Unlike Dark Souls, where you’re basically alone until you invite some pals to aid, you appear to have two NPCs joining you in a fight in Final Fantasy Origin.

The fighting, on the other hand, appeared to be rather exciting. There was a variety of weaponry, each with its own aesthetic, and some of the monster designs felt like grittier versions of classic Final Fantasy animals.

That trailer, on the other hand, was horrifying. At the same time, this is the development team behind the outstanding action franchises Nioh and Ninja Gaiden. So perhaps it’ll strike the ideal blend of camp and cool.

Final Fantasy Origin will be released next year. Starting today, a sample of the game is accessible on PlayStation 5.
